Have You Seen the #Agile2016 Line-up?
This is the second blog installment of my personal recommendations for what to check out at the Agile 2016 event.
The Agile2016 Conference is getting close! It starts July 25th in Atlanta and we are excited! Agile2016 is an incredible conference, dedicated to furthering Agile principles and providing the space for our agile community to meet and share. I’ve been in the community several years now (I’m really psyched to be presenting this year with my colleague Cher Fox) and have met a number of these presenters, know their work and am excited to share some of my stories about how I met them or know them and some of my thoughts about the program.
My recommendations for Monday, July 25 can be found here: Agile2016 Day One
Tuesday, July 26
Swarm – Beyond Pair, Beyond Scrum (Danijel Arsenovski) – I have led several teams in swarming (aka “mobbing”) sessions and they have all found it opened their eyes to the real value of many agile practices and added a useful tool to add to their toolkits.
Introduction to Agile Development Practice Basics for Everyone (not just Developers) (Tim Ottinger) – I first learned about pair programming from Tim, who has a great way of explaining technical agile practices to a wide audience.
Escape a collapsing Temple and learn about Agile team dynamics (Martin Heider) – I really enjoy hands-on, game-based activities that help participants understand “Agile” better. This one looks really interesting and I hope it’s something good to add to my coaching tool kit!
Test Automation: Agile Enablement for Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence Teams (Lynn Winterboer, Cher Fox) – Well, what sort of recommendation list would this be if I didn’t recommend my own session? We’ve presented 5 times locally already and each time this content has been very well-received.
#DiscoveryDojo: Hunting Value with Structured Conversations (Ellen Gottesdiener, Steve Holyer) – Dojo Circles? I gotta know more. This sounds fun (very hands on) and I’ve heard of such great things about Ellen. “The session weaves quick teaching moments with coaching dojo circles. You practice with colleagues in each dojo – doing, facilitating, coaching, observing and providing feedback.”
Coaching Teams: Environment + People (Esther Derby) – I have been a fan of Esther’s work for many years, ever since I first read her book, Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great
Pin the Tail on the Metric (Steve Martin) – I’m interested in how organizations decide what to measure, and this sound be interesting: “We’ll be workshopping through the critical thinking necessary for you to determine what is right for your organization and teams.”
The State of NoEstimates (Woody Zuill) – I’m a HUGE fan of #NoEstimates. Estimating is a poor use of valuable time. However, we still need to meet the organization’s needs for predictability. I’m looking forward to hearing what Woody has to share on this topic!
The Five Dysfunctions of an Improvised Comedy Group (Paul Hammond, Daniel Attfield) – I’ve had very good experience incorporating improve skills into my own practice, and sharing those skills with others. I look forward to learning more in this session.
Advice Process for Effective Organizational Decision-Making (Michael Sahota) – I’ve been to several of Michael’s sessions over many years and always bring home something new that I can use the next day.
WIP: The tragedy continues (Eric Willeke) – Eric is a really smart dude with a whole lot of good experience under his belt. This will be a great session on how to decide between starting everything or finishing something.
Growing Your Servant Leadership (Johanna Rothman) – I faithfully read Johanna’s blog each week. She’s got amazing insights into human beings, and offers practical, spirited ideas for being a better one.
Your User Stories Are Too Big! (Chris Sims) – Chris Sims is a favorite of mine – I have seen him present many times. He’s humble, intelligent, and full of great ideas with actionable guidance. His Scrum2016 session on retrospective games was awesome – He managed to get close to 100 people all doing a variety of exercises for 45 minutes, and it worked!
Agile Capitalization (Dan Greening) – One of the common challenges to Agile transformation is how to manage finances in this new approach. Dan is a well-respected and experienced Agile leader who can shed light on this important topic.
Virtuous Metrics – Most metrics are the devil. Be an angel. (Adam Weisbart) – I started following Adam years ago when he led the Open Space session at the 2013 Scrum Gathering. He cracks me up in the awesome video, “Sh*t Bad Scrum Masters Say.” His website is full of great ideas and hilarious products. Go hear what he has to say!
Ron & Chet’s Stalwarts Session (Ron Jeffries, Chet Hendrickson) – Must-see for technical folks or those who want to work well with technical folks.
Foundations of Quality (Paul Carvalho) – Paul and I worked with the same client a few years ago, and I really enjoyed getting to know him, and learning from him. His session will useful for anyone who wants to understand the “underlying principles and foundations that will help you understand and define Quality.”
The Winterboer Agile Analytics team will be there! Be sure to tweet me @agilelynn so we can connect!
